General Guidelines for Abstract Submission
The abstract submission process is used for both the in-person meeting and the virtual event.

Members must choose to submit their abstract for EITHER the in-person meeting OR the virtual event.

Members may not submit the abstract for consideration for both events. (However, if there are available time slots, members who were not selected to present at the in-person meeting may be invited to present at the virtual meeting.)

MIDAS members may only submit ONE abstract for review as the main presenting author.  MIDAS members may be listed as authors on other abstract submissions where they are not the main presenting author.

Abstract and Biography Guidelines

  • Title of abstract: maximum 150 characters.
  • Abstract word limit: 300 words.
  • The abstract should not include references.
  • The abstract should not include any details that identify the authors.
  • Author limit: maximum 20 authors listed on an abstract.
  • Presenter biography word limit: 200 words.
  • Each submission should list only ONE main presenting author. You may list any co-presenters in your biography section.

In-person Meeting

There are four types of presentation options.

a) Scientific session with breakout discussion group

– Each session has three presenters who give 10-minute scientific talks, heard by all attendees. This is then followed by three concurrent breakout discussion groups. Attendees decide which breakout group they wish to attend based on hearing the short talks.

– Following the short talks, each of the three presenters lead a 25-minute breakout discussion group for their topic. This is where attendees can ask questions, and the presenter can guide more in-depth discussion.

b) Lightning talks

– Each presenter will have 2-3 minutes to speak. (This may change depending on the number of accepted abstracts).

– There will be an informal networking event after the lightning talks, where attendees can chat with presenters.

– Optional: presenters may display a poster of their talk during the networking event following the talks.

c) Demonstration of data or software resource

– These sessions offer MIDAS members the opportunity to provide tutorials or demonstrations of software/tools. Members may choose either a 30-minute or 60-minute time slot for their session.

d) Poster presentations

– Presenters set up their posters and describe their research as attendees stop by during the poster session. This will be another networking opportunity for attendees and presenters, in addition to the event following the Lightning talks.

– Poster size: 48 inches by 36 inches. While most posters are horizontally oriented, you may also orient your poster vertically.

Virtual Meeting

There are two types of presentation options.

a) Scientific session and Q&A

– Each one-hour session will have either two x 20-minute or three x 15-minute scientific talks with Q&A. The number of talks will depend on the number of accepted abstracts.

b) Lightning talks

– Each presenter will have 2-3 minutes to speak.  (This may change depending on the number of accepted abstracts).
