Development of Forecasts and/or Scenario Projections for Influenza to Inform Public Health Decision Making

The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) is pleased to announce a Funding Opportunity Announcement to support academic, nonprofit organizations, or private industry groups to develop or improve influenza forecasts and their utilization and communication to better inform public health decision-making during the upcoming influenza season.

Ideal applicants should have knowledge and experience with forecasting and/or scenario modeling. Priority will be given to applicants who have previously produced real-time probabilistic influenza forecasts, applicants who have worked closely with federal, state, and local public health officials to provide influenza forecasts, and applicants who have previously produced probabilistic forecasts for other infectious diseases. CSTE intends to award up to $125,000 to each successful applicant. The number of projects funded and the amount awarded to each project will depend on the quality and scope of project proposals.

(1) Develop and submit forecasts and/or scenario projections in a real-time manner for the rapid dissemination and utilization by federal, state, and local public health officials.

(2) Develop visualizations and other relevant tools that support the effective communication of forecasts and/or projections to various stakeholders to guide decision-making.

(3) Engage in an open forum network with other forecasting teams and public health professionals to address topics such as access to data sources and forecast interpretation.

Eligible applicants are non-federal public health professionals (including, but not limited to, those from institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, or private consultants) with advanced knowledge and experience with forecasting, including use of innovative methodologies and any documented evaluation of previous forecasting activities.
