Updates to RTIs COVID-19 Agent-Based Model: Preparing for COVID-19 Intervention Testing in Nursing Homes

RTI is hosting a presentation on recent updates to their agent-based model being used to help assess the impact of COVID-19.

  • Abstract: At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, RTI repurposed our geospatially explicit agent-based model (ABM) of North Carolina’s healthcare system. We used this model to simulate the impact of COVID-19 on hospital capacity in North Carolina (code available). Building on this work, our next goal is to use the model to test different intervention strategies designed to reduce potential SARS-CoV-2 transmission risk in nursing homes. In preparation for this task, we have made several updates and improvements to our model. These include increasing model flexibility, connecting to new datasets to vary parameters at the facility level, and improving our compartmental models for forecasting SARS-CoV-2 cases. In addition, we have added three new components to the ABM: 1) healthcare workers, 2) agent-specific vaccination status, and 3) nursing home visitation. In this presentation we will discuss these model updates and our plan for using this model to assess the impact of COVID-19 on nursing homes under different scenarios.
