Abstract:
HIV-1 transmission is characterised by a sharp reduction of the viral diversity after transitioning to a new host. Despite high viral loads and diverse HIV-1 populations in most transmitters, only a limited number of viruses establish infection in the recipient. The relative contributions of transmitter and recipient factors in modulating this observed diversity bottleneck remain unclear. My research program combines phylogenetics with mathematical modelling to quantify the role of multiple factors in the diversity bottleneck and reconcile HIV-1 population-level epidemiological data.
Resumen:
La transmisión de HIV-1 es caracterizada por una abrupta reducción de la diversidad viral después de realizarse la transición a un nuevo huésped. A pesar de la alta carga viral y diversidad de las poblaciones de HIV-1 en la mayoría de los transmisores, solo un número limitado de virus establecen una infección en el recipiente. Aún no es claro el impacto de las contribuciones relativas de los factores del transmisor y recipiente en la modulación del cuello de botella de diversidad observado. Mi programa de investigación combina filogenética y modelamiento matemático para cuantificar el papel de múltiples factores en el cuello de botella de diversidad, reconciliando así datos epidemiológicos a nivel poblacional de HIV-1.
