MIDAS member Dr. Rebecca Christofferson helps speed up coronavirus testing in Louisiana

Over the course of just a few days in March, Dr. Rebecca Christofferson’s lab at the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine teamed up with other collaborators to obtain federal approval for a new coronavirus testing lab, named the River Road Testing Lab. Their work is currently supporting 18 Louisiana Medical Facilities by rapidly testing patient samples, as reported in this Louisiana State University news article. The lab has completed approximately 2,500 tests so far since March 23.

The LSU River Road Testing Lab is led by Dr. Rebecca Christofferson and Dr. Stephania Cormier. Other team members are Dr. Luan Dinh Vu, postdoctoral researcher; Anh Phan, research associate; Thaya Stoufflet, pathobiological sciences research associate; Dr. Abbie Fish, biosafety manager; as well as graduate assistants Handly Mayton, Christine Walsh, and Erik Turner.

Dr. Christofferson commented that she is especially proud of the effort by her graduate students in this tweet from April 7.
