Topic: “Disease control by system theoretic means”
Speaker: Dr. Abhishek Dutta from the University of Connecticut
Abstract: The waves of COVID-19 infections driven by its emerging variants continue to pose challenge at the population and in-host levels. The two major variants-driven waves are modeled by two sets of susceptible-infected-quarantined-recovered-vaccinated-deceased coupled dynamics. A feedback control based planned vaccination strategy is then derived and shown to be able to suppress the surge in infections effectively. Next, a systematic pathological model of COVID-19 dynamics followed by derivative free optimization based multi objective drug rescheduling is introduced. The pathological model learnt from clinical data of severe COVID-19 patients treated with remdesivir could additionally predict immune T cells response and results in a dramatic reduction in remdesivir dose and schedule leading to lower toxicities, however maintaining a high virological efficacy.
Bio: Abhishek Dutta received his M.S. from the University of Edinburgh in 2007 and Ph.D. from Ghent University in 2014. He did his Postdoc from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign between 2014-2016. Since 2016, he has been an Assistant Professor with the Departments of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Dutta is the recipient of the AI 2000 most influential scholar award in the field of multimedia (2022) and the informatics prize for outstanding thesis from Edinburgh (2007). Dr. Dutta’s use of control theory, deep learning, and optimization techniques to understand and regulate infectious diseases and complex disorders open new possibilities.
