Abstract:
The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated the need for improved and coordinated approaches to modeling the many complex aspects of host responses to pathogens, ranging from control of transport and barrier function in infection, to viral replication and immune response in tissues, to personalized models of individual responses to therapies. While programs such as MIDAS have long sought to coordinate modeling and data collection efforts for epidemiological modeling, host-level modeling efforts have been fragmented and lacked a forum to exchange ideas, organize collaborations, prioritize research areas, and identify data sources.
The IMAG Working Group on Multiscale Modeling and Viral Pandemics was founded in Fall 2020 to provide such a forum, to build a sense of community among host-level modelers, and to create a series of technical documents and position papers identifying key opportunities and needs. Another goal of the working group is to coordinate with communities developing datasets and modeling approaches at other scales (such as MIDAS) to help build collaborations and explore the most productive opportunities for cross-scale integration.
