The Emerging Leaders in Data Science Fellowship Program addresses a critical need at the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for expertise in data science and ability to apply those skills to the NIAID mission. The program aims to establish a cadre of talented data scientists (i.e., expertise in biomedical informatics, computational biology, epidemiology, computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, or related fields) with a keen interest in applying their knowledge and skills to advance NIAID’s research mission.
This is a rotation-based learning program. Fellows will perform projects (each lasting for up to 6 months) as they rotate through NIAID divisions. Each fellow will be responsible for coordinating his/her rotations. We encourage the fellows to participate in a variety of developmental assignments during their fellowship to broaden their perspectives on the mission of NIAID and NIH, strengthen technical competencies, acquire a broad understanding of data needs at NIAID from a variety of views, and further develop their leadership abilities.
Fellows will receive training and hands-on experience in data analytics, informatics strategies, computational platforms, and software development to study infectious diseases and immune-mediated disorders in NIAID’s intramural and extramural programs. They will receive training at the intersection of disease-oriented and data-intense research efforts.
In addition, the program provides trainings to strengthen fellows’ scientific, technical, and leadership competencies. Fellows will receive personalized career and scientific mentorship from NIAID advisors. Each fellow is also encouraged to select a mentor at the start of the program, who can advise them on rotation opportunities and career goals.
