In 2007, Dr. Ricardo Castillo Neyra received the degree of doctor in veterinary medicine from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Peru. After several years researching neglected zoonotic diseases in the north coast, Lima and the southern highlands in Peru, Dr. Castillo began his doctoral training at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, USA, where he received the PhD degree in epidemiology and Master’s in international health, both in 2014. Since then, he has continued to study neglected diseases in Peru, where he is the scientific director of the Zoonotic Diseases Research Laboratory, a collaborative research center between the University of Pennsylvania and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. In addition, Dr. Castillo is an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and co-director of the Certified Public Health Program for Ph.D. students in biomedical sciences at the same university. Dr. Castillo is especially interested in the social and ecological factors that drive the emergence and persistence of infectious diseases in urban areas. Much of his previous work has been on Chagas disease, and his most recent line of research focuses on canine rabies. Dr. Castillo's canine rabies projects use a wide range of research tools and techniques: community surveys, GPS tracking of roaming dogs, qualitative studies, among others. His methodological interests include spatial analysis, optimization of interventions to control infectious diseases, design of community studies, and especially the integration of various disciplines of knowledge through the One Health approach. Dr. Castillo's research team is made up of biologists, veterinarians, psychologists, engineers, and people from other disciplines, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his research.
